Ceramic Restoration with Gold
KINTSUI LECTURE AND MAKI-E WORKSHOP
Kintsugi is a traditional Japanese art and repair technique that restores broken ceramics to practical use (food-safe). In the Kintsugi process, which takes at least 2 months, no chemical materials are used. Instead, it employs Urushi, a sap that has been used in Japan for over 10,000 years, to bond the fragments and embellish the surface with pure gold. This technique of embellishing with pure gold is known as "maki-e." Using this technique, you can create decorative patterns with pure gold as if they were painted with a brush.

In this workshop, you will apply maki-e to your own tea tool, wooden/bamboo item, matcha bowls, or wine glasses. If you don't have any items to bring, you can purchase items like a chashaku (teaspoon) or wooden spoon at the venue.
For information regarding materials suitable for maki-e, design sizes, and more, please visit Kintsugica's website https://introjapan.ca
This workshop uses Urushi lacquer. Please be aware that unset Urushi contains a substance called Urushiol, which can trigger allergies and is the same substance found in Poison Ivy. Before registering, make sure to read the precautions on the website.
